Still thinking about resolutions? Expert says make them more attainable and not as big

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – One local expert says if you’re still thinking about a New Year’s resolution, you’re not alone; but, maybe how you go about it might need to be change.

“Sometimes you just have to scale it back, and instead of tackling everything…maybe start a little smaller, something that’s more sustainable or attainable,” said Dr. Nicole Florence, Medical Director, Memorial Wellness Center, on the WTAX Morning Newswatch.  “I’m going to go for a walk 15 minutes a day, or I’m going to go to the gym every other day.”

Florence says statistics indicate less than ten percent of people follow their resolutions by the end over the year, while 25 percent only make it to a month.

“If you were planning on eating healthier, and maybe making your lunch every day for work, maybe you try to do it every other day.  Maybe you take things on Monday, so the food’s already there,” said Florence.  “There’s always time to make an adjustment on what your goal was.”

While eating healthy and being more physically active are the things people resolve to do the most, Florence says maybe other things should be under consideration, too.

“Let’s talk about your sleep.  Let’s talk about your stress management, which is huge, and there’s different ways to tackle that,” said Florence.  “We always talk about self care, and sometimes it can mean different things for different people.”

In the realm of self care, Florence says maybe you think you’re taking care of yourself when you’re really not, or it’s not getting the desired results.

Florence says some good ideas for resolutions include doing something new, or being more creative.
