Nokomis, IL (WAND) – A Nokomis police officer was relieved from duty for the remainder of their shift Wednesday after an incident at a Casey’s gas station.

According to Nokomis Mayor Dylan Goldsmith, the city was made aware of a “reported matter” involving the officer at Casey’s. Goldsmith said the officer was relieved of duty for the remainder of that shift immediately following the matter.

The details around the incident are unclear, but Goldsmith said no final determination has been made and the matter is under internal review.

The name of the officer is not being released at this time due to the active internal review. The officer has remained assigned to duty with supervisory oversight while the review is done.

“As Mayor, I expect our police officers to meet the highest standard of professionalism, judgement, and public trust. This matter will not be ignored, minimized, or prejudged,” Goldsmith said. “If the facts show that corrective or employment action is warranted, appropriate action will be taken in accordance with city policies, applicable law, and any collective bargaining obligations. At the same time, it is important that the review be completed fairly and based on facts, rather than on rumor or speculation.”

Goldsmith said more information may be provided when appropriate. WAND News has reached out to the Nokomis Police Department, but has not heard back yet.
