Decatur, IL (WAND) – At least one tornado touched down in Macon County on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Lincoln.

Multiple homes in the Long Creek area were heavily damaged, with roofs toppled or completely ripped off.

One mother on Jeanette Drive was home with her two-year-old daughter when she saw a tornado headed right at her house.

“It came straight towards the house, shook my whole house,” Tiffany Compagni said. “I grabbed my daughter and pinned her underneath me, crouched down and then the roof fell off.”

Compagni said all she felt was panic when she saw the twister. Now, she and her family are faced with a big clean-up.

“We’re getting all of our stuff that we can salvage out of the house, and thankfully, we have insurance, so they’re here to help us work through the process,” Compagni said. “I’ve never been through anything like this in my life. No fires, no tornadoes, no water, no nothing. This is our first house, so it’s very shocking.”

A couple of miles away, at the corner of Walmsley and Sand Creek roads, an entire garage and roof collapsed off a home.

Neighbor Greg Bandelow said he went over after the storm passed to make sure nobody was trapped inside.

“We went in to make sure they weren’t in there. A deputy sheriff was here and there was nobody in the house. They found out they were in Mexico,” Bandelow said. “You get a call in Mexico that your house got hit by a tornado, that’s pretty devastating, I would say,” Bandelow said.

Bandelow said the family had just moved into the home a few weeks ago.
