Massey panel leads up to recommendations

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Massey Commission is winding down one phase of its work: to come up with recommendations to the Sangamon County Board about, among other things, improving policing here.

The commission formed after a then-deputy shot and killed Sonya Massey in her home last year. The commission’s managing director, Kelly Hurst, said after Wednesday’s session, “I was really appreciative of the police officer who said, hey, I am a police officer, but I am here as a community member. I think that actually hits the nail on the head there, because everyone lives here, and so we are all a community. We need to determine what does that look like for us and what do we want it to look like.

“I’m appreciative people are showing up.”

Further meetings are Oct. 15 and 22, both at CAP 1908.

Sean Grayson, who claims self-defense in the July 6, 2024 shooting, goes to trial Oct. 20.
