Leslie Sgro honored with Mike Cassidy Award

Springfield, IL – (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Springfield Park District has announced that Leslie Sgro, president of the district, has been awarded the Mike Cassidy Commissioner Community Service Award. The award honors park commissioners who exemplify leadership, volunteerism, and a commitment to the community.

Sgro has served as president of the Springfield Park District for 33 years. During her leadership, the park district reports it has expanded by over 1,000 acres, preserved more than 450 acres of natural habitats, and implemented environmentally sustainable practices. Her efforts have significantly enhanced the park district’s infrastructure, including multi-use trails, playgrounds, pickleball courts, splash pads, and inclusive, accessible facilities.

Sgro has also dedicated her time and efforts to the Micro-Pantry Helpers, Interfaith Thanksgiving Basket Program, the Hoogland Center for the Arts and the Springfield/Sangamon County Regional Planning Commission.

“This statewide recognition speaks volumes about her exceptional leadership at the Springfield Park District,” said Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher.  “While our governmental bodies are separate, we share a commitment to serving our residents, and President
Sgro’s dedication to creating outstanding recreational opportunities has made our entire community a better place to live.”

The Mike Cassidy Commissioner Community Service Award was presented to Sgro during the All-Conference Luncheon at the annual Illinois Association of Park Districts/Illinois Park and Recreation Association Soaring to New Heights Conference on Jan. 30 This award is given annually in honor of the late Mike Cassidy, who served as a commissioner for the Freeport Park District for over 35 years.
