Springfield, IL (CHAMBANA TODAY) – For the fourth consecutive year, Illinois has seen a drop in interstate shootings, with zero fatal shootings reported in 2025 — the first time in roughly a decade. The Illinois State Police say the decrease is part of a sustained effort to improve public safety across the state.

Governor JB Pritzker highlighted the progress: “In the past four years alone, interstate shootings have decreased by 80%, and no one lost their life on Illinois’ interstates in 2025.”

Key facts from ISP’s report:

  • 31% decrease in interstate shootings from 2024 to 2025

  • 53% decrease from 2023 to 2025

  • 68% decrease from 2022 to 2025

  • 80% decrease from 2021 to 2025

  • No fatalities reported in 2025, a first in roughly 10 years

ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly credited a multifaceted approach, including:

  • Air Operations to track fleeing vehicles and reduce high-speed pursuits
  • Automated License Plate Readers to assist with investigations and real-time enforcement

  • K9 units, forensics, and investigative personnel deployed statewide

Since the 2021 post-pandemic spike, Illinois has implemented these measures along with the Tamara Clayton Expressway Camera Act of 2020, installing ALPR cameras on interstates in multiple counties.

The ISP said it remains committed to keeping communities safe by reducing shootings, removing illegal guns and drugs from the streets, and evolving strategies to meet emerging crime challenges.
