Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The UIS women’s basketball program has announced the promotion of D’Angelo Hughes to full-time assistant coach following two seasons in a part-time role.

A Springfield native and Southeast High School graduate, Hughes brings strong local roots, valuable championship experience, and a passionate commitment to elevating the Prairie Stars program.

“I’m excited to bring D’Angelo into the full-time assistant role with our program,” said head coach Olivia Birt. “He has shown great commitment to the program and a work ethic that will help our program continue to grow. D’Angelo not only strengthens our connections to the Springfield area, but brings a championship mentality that was cultivated through his own playing career at the Division II level.”

Hughes played four seasons at Ferris State University, helping the Bulldogs capture the 2018 NCAA Division II national championship. He was a 32-game starter as a senior during the 2019-20 season, averaging 9.1 points and 4.4 assists per game. He posted a career-best 11.0 points per game as a junior in 2018-19.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Ferris State, and is a 2016 graduate of Springfield Southeast High School.
