Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Gas prices are, arguably, still high in Illinois.  But, a weekly reports indicates they’ve dropped at a considerable rate over the last week.

According to the weekly survey of more than 4,300 gas stations in Illinois by GasBuddy, the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline in Illinois was $4.13 a gallon as of Monday morning, a decline of 17.6 cents over the past week.  It’s also 82.7 cents lower than a month ago, but 72.1 cents higher than a year ago.

In Springfield, a map of prices as tracked by GasBuddy ranged from $3.73 a gallon on the southwest side of the city, to $3.89 a gallon on the northeast side.  None were above $4 a gallon.

Springfield’s gas prices are lower than both Peoria and Champaign.  While both were lower than the week before, Peoria’s average is at $4.24 a gallon, while Champaign’s was at $4.02 a gallon.

The continued downward trajectory in gas prices is not assured, however.

“Average gasoline prices declined in nearly every state over the last week, while all 50 states saw average diesel prices move lower,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, in a news release. “However, the outlook is far from settled. New uncertainty has emerged after Iran suggested the Strait of Hormuz was closed, along with fresh warnings that the U.S. could again strike Iran, developments that could push oil prices higher in the days ahead.”

According to AAA, its Illinois gas price average is at $4.17 a gallon.  Its Sangamon County gas price average is near $3.93.  Most other counties in the area remain above $4 a gallon.

AAA’s national gas price average is at about $3.93 a gallon.
