Peoria, IL (WAND) – The first week of testimony in the Sean Grayson murder trial has concluded, and the family of Sonya Massey is opening up about how they’re coping as the case unfolds in court.

Grayson, a former Sangamon County deputy, faces charges of first-degree murder in the 2024 shooting death of 36-year-old Sonya Massey. Prosecutors say the incident occurred after Massey called 911 for help at her home.

Throughout the week, jurors heard from several witnesses — including law enforcement officers, crime scene analysts, and first responders. The prosecution also replayed body camera footage from the night of the shooting — video that Massey’s family says remains difficult to watch.

Sonya’s cousin, Sontae, spoke with WAND on behalf of the family, describing the emotional toll of sitting through testimony and evidence.

“We have to relive this every day,” Sontae said. “We’ve had an outpouring of love and respect, but we still have to see yard signs with Sonya’s picture on them. We have to see the video — and then look at her children, who look just like her. It’s something we carry every day.”

The family says even seeing supporters gather outside the courthouse brings mixed emotions.

“We understand it gives people hope and strength,” Sontae said. “But for us, it’s still a reminder of what we’ve lost. We appreciate the marches and the signs — but it’s hard to see her face everywhere knowing she’s not here.”

Despite the pain, the Massey family says their close bond keeps them moving forward together.

“It’s no secret we’re a tight family,” Sontae added. “The love we have for each other is what gets us through. We have fun when we can, we cry when we need to, and we just get through it as a family.”

The Sean Grayson murder trial will resume Monday morning at 9 a.m. Testimony is expected to continue through next week, with closing statements anticipated midweek.
