Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) -Even before President Trump gave a speech Wednesday night updating the American people on the situation with Iran, Senator Dick Durbin had his doubts about what could be said.

Durbin was at Springfield’s Municipal Center Wednesday to announce grants for water main improvements and work to be done at the Lincoln Home, said don’t believe anything you hear.

“I don’t think the President thought this through clearly when he invaded this country,” said Durbin, to reporters.  “I don’t think he has a clear mission in terms of pulling out of Iran.”

Durbin says when Trump talks about ending the war in two to three weeks, don’t believe it.

“He’s making that up,” said Durbin.  “As gas prices go up…as the stock market is unstable, he’s announcing ‘We’re in negotiations with the Iranians.’  Yet, when you talk to the Iranians, they say no negotiations are going.”

Durbin says Trump must not have known that despite the supply of oil the U.S. has, closing the Straits of Hormuz would cause gas prices to go up anyway. He calls rising gas prices “an unpopular move.”
