Horace Mann CFO dies after illness

Dwayne Hallman/Horace Mann

A longtime executive with Springfield-based Horace Mann insurance has died.

Horace Mann says Chief Financial Officer Dwayne Hallman has passed away. Hallman was taken to the hospital Monday with what the company only says was a “severe medical incident.”

He had been with Horace Mann since 2003 — first as Senior Vice President of Finance, then was elevated to his move recent job in 2010.

Horace Mann CEO Marita Zuraitis says in a news release the company is “deeply saddened” by the passing, and she will miss Hallman’s leadership.

Bret Conklin was named acting CFO in accordance with a succession plan on Monday.
