A New Law Will Support Community Health Workers

A New Law Will Support Community Health Workers

A new law is designed to help create new standards for so-called community health workers.

These are workers that help people with basic health questions, such as when to take their medication, and what kind of health provider to visit. State Rep. Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston) says until now, these workers had a sort of unofficial status with the state.

“This will give them a certification process and a career path for them to better themselves, better their families, as they provide much needed services to the community,” Gabel said.

The law, which goes into effect immediately, creates a 15-member advisory board which will recommend standards for training and certification.
